Manchester Women’s Aid event for IWD – expressions of interest sought by 10th February 2012

2 February 2012 at 5:41 pm

Manchester Women’s Aid are holding an event to celebrate International Women’s Day on Thursday 8th March 2012. This is a ‘save the date’ email to ask initial interest, there will be publicity to follow shortly.

The event is taking place between 10:00am-3:00pm at the Whitworth Art Gallery in Manchester and we hope to provide a creche.

Whilst we are currently fine tuning the details, we would like to invite your organisation to come to the event and bring a group of young women.

This is a women only event.

Also if you feel there is anyone who would benefit from volunteering on the day, please get in contact as we have a variety of roles they could help with.

We will be delivering a series of 5 workshops on a carousel basis. The workshops will be delivered in partnership with Brook, LGBT Youth North West, Feminist Webs and the Roots Project and we aim to create a positive atmosphere in which young women can reflect on what it means to be a woman in society today and find out more about support services in the city of Manchester.

Attendees will have the opportunity to recognise and develop their creative skills through artistic workshops and focus on raising their self-esteem during a workshop on Living Life to the Full delivered by MWA’s Mental Health Worker. In addition to the workshops, other groups will be invited to hold a stall during the event or send publicity to promote their service.

The focus of one of the workshops will be the creation of an animation entitled I am … Women are … . In which all attendees will be encouraged to write a statement about women on the palm of their hand, that represents the many skills and strengths of women. The women’s hands will then be photographed individually and pieced together to make a stop motion animation. The animation will later be displayed as part of an International Women’s Day exhibition at the People’s History Museum, facilitated by Feminist Webs.

We intend to create a participatory event in which women will be able to take tokens home including an empowerment badge and an alternative self-portrait photograph of themselves. Some of these may also be chosen for the exhibition at the People’s History Museum and all women who attend our event will be invited to the exhibition which starts on the Saturday 10th the March.

If you are interested in attending and bringing a group of young women please respond to this email to joanna.lane@manchesterwomensaid.org by Friday 10th February with a provisional number of young women you would like to bring and if they require a creche place.

As this is a women only event the youth worker/Tutor would also have to be female.

Thank you and we look forward to hearing from you soon. Publicity and itinerary will follow.

There may be the option of a stall too, so get in touch if this is something you are interested in.

Thanks
