International Women in Law Summit 2012: Setting the agenda for change – London ~ 8th March 2012

9 February 2012 at 5:37 pm

International Women’s Day, is marked on 8 March every year. This is a major day of global celebration of women. In different regions the focus of activities ranges from general celebration respect and appreciation to celebrations of women’s economic, political and social achievements.

On 8 March, The Law Society will be hosting a summit to celebrate International Women’s Day. A pre-summit networking dinner will take place on 7 March.

The summit is being jointly organised by the Law Society of England and Wales and the USA based National Association of Women Lawyers (NAWL). It is supported by the Association of Women Solicitors (AWS) and Catalyst and sponsored by LexisNexis.

Whilst the number of women entering the legal profession has steadily increased, there is evidence that there are factors which negatively impact on their careers because of their gender. The top of the legal sector remains stubbornly male-dominated with the belief that high status roles can only be achieved at the sacrifice of personal values and family relationships.

Women identify barriers which include issues of organisational culture, outdated perceptions of the roles that women fulfil, resistance to contemporary management practices and a lack of female role models.

Over the past three decades much work has been done from both organisational and national perspectives to identify and address the barriers to women’s career progression. The aim of this summit is:
* to identify and address the barriers to women’s career progression through the exchange of successful strategies for change; and
* as a legacy – to create a manifesto which will drive a more proactive agenda at both national and international levels.

The event promises to be energetic, inspiring and topical with a summit programme that focuses on moving past awareness raising to the delivery of a bolder, more proactive agenda – one which aims to articulate the change required and how to achieve this change.

The summit programme brings together a dynamic mix of high profiled keynote speakers, informative and interactive plenary sessions and a stimulating array of interactive and delegate led breakout sessions covering a range of topical issues affecting women in law. Breakout sessions will examine key issues such as targets versus quotas, workplace culture, working practices in firms, career support mechanisms and operation in global markets.

The gala dinner on the eve of the summit combined with a working lunch and post summit drinks reception will provide ample opportunity for delegates, speakers and sponsors to mingle and network.
