Free film event to mark IWD in Dumfries ~ 8th March 2012

1 March 2012 at 7:53 pm

To mark International Women’s Day next Thursday, March 8, the Domestic Abuse and Violence Against Women Partnership has organised a free screening of “Killing Us Softly 4” at the Robert Burns Film Centre, Dumfries. The screening starts at 6.30pm.

The film provides a very interesting insight into the role of gender stereotypes in connection with gender-based violence and how advertising impacts on our culture. There will be an opportunity for an informal discussion after the film. Tea/coffee will be provided.

Deputy Chief Constable Mike McCormick said: “International Women’s Day marks women’s achievements in their pursuit of equality. The Domestic Abuse and Violence Against Women’s Partnership wants to celebrate the advances that have been made but also to recognise that far too many women continue to experience forms of abuse and violence, including domestic abuse, rape, stalking and harassment.

“As a partnership, we are committed to working towards the elimination of violence against women and want to encourage awareness through showing this DVD exploring how women are presented in advertising and having a discussion afterwards. We hope that this will help raise understanding of the many issues that impact on women and explore the many issues around violence against women.”

The film will also be screened on Monday, March 26, at 1pm at the Ryan Centre in Stranraer.
