International Women’s Day Event: ‘Women and Work’ – Islington ~ 8th March 2012

To celebrate International Women’s Day, Islington Council is hosting a free careers event for women in the borough.

If you are looking for new opportunities and want to boost your employment skills then this is an event for you.

There will be over 26 stalls where you can speak to employers, council services and community organisations that will provide you with advice and support to get you back in the workforce.

Additionally, there will be eight short workshops where you will receive first hand tips and advice on a whole range of job possibilities.


Session 1 – 11.30am-12noon
‘Self-Employment’ – an introduction to starting your own business.
Presented by Elsa Caleb from the Association of Community Based Business Advice.
Venue: Islington Assembly Hall
‘Women in Transport’ – an introduction to careers in Transport for London (TfL).
Presented by Michele Dix from TfL
Venue: Committee Room 5, Islington Town Hall.

Session 2 – 12.15-12.45pm
‘Disability Works’ – information and advice on helping disabled women get into employment.
Presented by Leonard Cheshire
Venue: Islington Assembly Hall.
‘Women into Construction’ – an introduction to employment opportunities for women in construction and information on what women have done to help build the Olympic Park.
Presented by ‘Women into Construction.’
Venue: Committee Room 5, Islington Town Hall.

Session 3 – 1.45-2.15pm
‘Preparing for an interview’ – a session of tips and techniques on preparing for an interview.
Presented by IMECE – Turkish Speaking Women’s Group.
Venue: Islington Assembly Hall.
‘Employment issues for refugee and migrant women’ – a workshop on employment issues facing refugee and migrant women and how volunteering can help women take a positive step forward.
Presented by Adult Community Learning, Islington council.
Venue: Committee Room 5, Islington Town Hall.

Session 4 – 2.30-3pm
‘ESOL and Employability’ – an introduction to the ‘English for Speakers of Other Languages’ course and how it can lead to greater employability.
Venue: Islington Assembly Hall.
“Getting Myself Ready for Work’ – get tips on how to make your CV stand out to what not to leave out of a job application.
Venue: Committee Room 5, Islington Town Hall.

Venue: Assembly Hall Date:8 March 2012 11am – 3pm
Audience: Under 5s, Children (5 to 11), Young People (12+), Adults
Cost: Free
Notes: BSL interpreters and crèche facilities will also be available.
