Cake auction to help FGM victims – Redruth ~ 8th March 2012

2 March 2012 at 1:11 pm

The Melting Pot Café, in Redruth, is holding a celebrity cake auction on March 8 to mark International Women’s Day.

The event, which is being organised by campaigners from Diversity Network for Cornwall, will include cakes prepared by some of Cornwall’s top chefs.

Proceeds will go to a rescue centre for girls in Kenya, which deals with the victims of female genital mutilation (FGM).

Kaijiado Girls’ Education and Rehabilitation Centre helps rescue girls who are potential victims of forced marriage and ‘female circumcision’.

Yana Spencer, who works for a diversity organisation combating such practices, will travel to Kenya to volunteer at the centre in April, and all money raised will help buy educational materials and equipment, as well as ingredients for baking, which the girls find therapeutic.

It is believed that 20,000 British girls in the UK are victims of FGM each year. Ms Spencer’s trip will provide her with information to help fight this practice in Cornwall even more, especially as the girls at the centre are mostly 12 or 13 years old, the same age as the girls in the UK who are most at risk.

The auction begins at 6.30pm. The café is in the old grammar school in Redruth.
