Candlelight vigil for Marian Price – Derry ~ 8th March 2012

5 March 2012 at 7:09 pm

Derry community activist Roisin Barton has called on local women to support a candlelight vigil calling for the release of Marian Price on International Women’s Day.

Ms Barton is organising the vigil, which will be held at Free Derry Corner on Thursday March 8th at 7.30pm, to protest against what she describes as the “internment” of Ms Price.

The community worker said; “International Women’s Day is a celebration and reflection on the various achievements of women everywhere in the ongoing struggle against injustice and oppression.

“It is fitting that we highlight at this time the suffering of a 57 year-old woman, with a history of serious medical problems, who is being held in isolation as a Category A high risk prisoner in Hydebank Detention Centre.

“Since her arrest Marian Price has been held in solitary confinement for almost 10 months, under extreme psychological pressure, and painfully aware that any judicial decision in her favour will be automatically overturned by a Tory Minister with no mandate in this country.”

Ms Barton added; “I am not asking people to agree or disagree with Ms Price’s political beliefs. Her politics are not the issue. This woman’s human rights are being violated and her health abused by an establishment hell bent on showing it can detain indefinitely, on the most dubious and flimsy of grounds, anyone it considers a threat.”

“The international community, and Britain in particular, has quite rightly devoted much time and energy to highlighting and combating the oppression of women in Iraq, Iran and Afghanistan.

“I am calling on women, and women’s groups in particular, to show their opposition to this ongoing injustice.

“The abuse of Marian Price is a blatant abuse of state power and it is vital that everyone concerned about human rights should make their voice heard by attending this vigil,” she said.
