2012 Ursula Masson Memorial Lecture 8th March 2012 from 6 p.m. – 8 p.m.
Zen Room, Atrium Campus (CB403)

As part of the annual celebrations to mark International Women’s Day and to commemorate Ursula Masson, founder of the Centre for Gender Studies in Wales, Professor Jane Aaron will be delivering the 2012 Ursula Masson Memorial Lecture entitled “The Witch as Heroine in Welsh Gothic” held on 8th March at the University’s ATRiuM campus.

Dr Ursula Masson (1945-2008) was a much loved and highly esteemed historian at Glamorgan. She was founding co-director of the Centre for Gender Studies in Wales with Professor Jane Aaron, and was instrumental in founding Archif Menywod Cymru/Welsh Women’s Archive and its Roadshows.

This year’s lecture will be presented by Professor Jane Aaron, professor of literature and former co-director of the Centre for Gender Studies in Wales. Professor Aaron has written extensively on nineteenth and twentieth-century Welsh women’s writing, and is the editor of Honno Classics and co-editor of the University of Wales Press’ book series Gender Studies in Wales.

This lecture will discuss the representation of the witch as heroic avenger and wise woman in many Welsh Gothic fictions, and consider to what extent these unusually positive representations of witches may be linked to the role of the mother goddesses in early Celtic culture.

Refreshments will be served from 6pm.

Places are limited for this popular lecture so please check for availability to Dr Huw Jones by telephone (01443 668 524) or email on hjones6@glam.ac.uk

Please note: This year’s lecture is being held at the city campus, rather than at Treforest. The ATRiuM is adjacent to Queen’s Street Station. Parking is available at the Adam Street NCP.
