Walney bridge to become focus for Women’s Day campaigners – Barrow ~ 8th March 2012

7 March 2012 at 6:48 pm

Thursday is International Women’s Day, and campaigners from across the globe will come together to mark the occasion by standing together on bridges, this year including the Barrow landmark spanning Walney Channel.

The act first started in Afghanistan, when a group of Afghan women stood on a bridge and said they wanted to be included in peace negotiations.

It has since become symbolic of women across the world helping bridge the gap between war and peace, and last year saw 75,000 people come together on over 460 bridges across 70 countries and six continents.

This is the first time the demonstration has been staged in Barrow, having been organised by the town’s Soroptimist International branch. Liz Williams, project action officer for Soroptimist International of Barrow, said: “We would be happy if there were only two people standing there, but it is looking like it will be quite popular.

“We’ve been encouraged by the fact that the Soroptimist International of Windermere will be joining us, and the multicultural forum have said they’re interested.”

While demonstrations around the world will feature women from war-torn countries, including the Democratic Republic of the Congo and South Sudan, Mrs Williams believes it is just important to mark International Women’s Day here in the UK.

She said: “We are calling for women to have an equal voice in decision making, in peace negotiations, in parliament and local government, as well as at leadership level in companies and businesses

“I don’t think women’s voices are heard sufficiently – 51 per cent of the world’s population is female, but there are not 51 per cent of women in government, at the top of big business, in leadership.

“We want women to take control – there’s a glass ceiling and that ceiling could be broken if women took the initiative. I think it’s important that we do bring that message to Barrow.”

Men, women and children are all invited to join Soroptimist International of Barrow on Jubilee Bridge between 1.30pm and 2.30pm to show their support.
